Revd Dr Mike Kirby inaugurated as BIR President 2026-2028

01 October 2026

Revd Dr Mike Kirby, Honorary Lecturer in Radiotherapy Physics at the University of Liverpool and Honorary Senior Lecturer in Cancer Sciences at the University of Manchester, has been inaugurated as President of the British Institute of Radiology (BIR). The inauguration took place at an event in London on 16 September, with his two-year term beginning in October.

An active BIR member and former Chair of the BIR’s Oncology and Radiotherapy Special Interest Group (SIG), Mike is also a member of IPEM, AAPM, ASTRO, ESTRO and the ARR, and is a Fellow of the BIR.

We warmly welcome Revd Dr Mike Kirby to his new role and thank outgoing President Dr Nick Screaton for his dedication and commitment to the BIR over the past two years.

The inauguration was attended by BIR Fellows, members, industry partners, volunteers and staff, providing an opportunity to celebrate the work of the BIR and the people who make it happen, as well as to connect and network with colleagues.

On beginning his new role Revd Dr Mike Kirby said: “It is a real privilege and honour to be inaugurated as President of this amazing institute; especially seeing the long and illustrious line of past presidents, and all that has been achieved for our healthcare professions in that time.

I hope I can serve the membership, and beyond, by continuing and building upon the tremendous work that has been done; especially in terms of working together with our other professional institutes, industry, Council, BIR staff, our SIGs and membership, and new partners.”

Claire Angus, CEO, BIR commented: “It is a real pleasure to welcome Mike as President of the BIR. Mike’s experience and commitment to radiotherapy will bring a valuable perspective to the role, and his presidency is a great reflection of the breadth of our multidisciplinary community. One of the BIR’s real strengths is our ability to bring people from different disciplines together to share ideas, learn from one another and drive innovation. I’m really looking forward to working with Mike and seeing all that we can achieve together during his presidency.”

Prior to his academic career, Mike worked as a Radiotherapy Physicist in the NHS from 1988 to 2010 at The Christie and Royal Preston Hospitals. During his final role at The Christie, he was Consultant Clinical Scientist and Head of Radiotherapy Physics (Satellite Centres).

Throughout his professional career, Mike has served on IPEM, BIR and multidisciplinary committees.

His research interests focus on image-guided radiotherapy, networking, service delivery and education.  Most recently he’s co-authored a textbook for RT students/trainees on On-Treatment Verification Imaging/IGRT for CRC Press.  The second book, Clinical Insights for IGRT: Prostate, was published in 2024, and the third is in preparation.  Mike is also a priest in the Church of England, having studied at Cambridge and Cumbria Universities and served at Blackburn, Chester and Liverpool (Anglican) Cathedrals, being presently Canon Scientist at the latter.
