George du Boulay Award

12 June 2025

George du Boulay's remarkable legacy lives on as the British Institute of Radiology (BIR) takes on the role of hosting and supporting the newly established BIR George du Boulay Pump-Priming Award.

The Radiological Research Trust (RRT) has announced that the BIR will now serve as the awarding body for this prestigious accolade, created in honour of Professor George du Boulay.

Professor George du Boulay CBE, FRCR, FRCP, was a trailblazing academic neuroradiologist and a founding member of the British Society of Neuroradiologists. In 1985, he founded the RRT to address the critical shortage of funding for research and education in medical imaging, becoming its first director.

Over the years, the RRT has championed numerous innovative projects, ranging in scope and scale, that have propelled advancements in radiological research and benefited the imaging community.

Sara Purdy, CEO of BIR, expressed her enthusiasm for this new partnership:
“We are delighted and honoured to have been entrusted by the RRT with the responsibility of awarding the BIR George du Boulay Pump-Priming Award. This initiative celebrates groundbreaking projects that are transforming patient care and refining the way we deliver healthcare services.”
