Revd Canon Dr Mike Kirby

Mike KirbyThe Revd Canon Dr Mike Kirby is Honorary Lecturer (Radiotherapy Physics) at Liverpool University and Honorary Senior Lecturer (Cancer Sciences) at Manchester University.  Prior to academic work, he was a Radiotherapy Physicist in the NHS from 1988 to 2010 at the Christie and Royal Preston Hospitals.  He was a Consultant Clinical Scientist and Head of Radiotherapy Physics (Satellite Centres) for his final work for the Christie.  Throughout his professional work, he has served on IPEM, BIR and multidisciplinary committees and co-authored/edited IPEM Reports 92, 93, 94 and the RCR’s ‘On Target’ and ‘On Target 2’ publications.  

An active member and previous chair of the BIR’s Oncology and Radiotherapy SIG, Mike is also a member of IPEM, AAPM, ASTRO, ESTRO, the ARR and fellow of the BIR.  His research interests focus on image-guided radiotherapy, networking, service delivery and education.  Most recently he’s co-authored a textbook for RT students/trainees on On-Treatment Verification Imaging/IGRT for CRC Press.  The second book, Clinical Insights for IGRT: Prostate, was published in 2024, and the third is in preparation.  Mike is also a priest in the Church of England, having studied at Cambridge and Cumbria Universities and served at Blackburn, Chester and Liverpool (Anglican) Cathedrals, being presently Canon Scientist at the latter.
