The Institute is delighted to announce the introduction this year of a new scheme for students/trainees based in the United Kingdom- free Associate Membership of the BIR if you have been in radiology for 5 years or less. Applicants must be residing in the UK and enrolled on a UK based training scheme. Please click on the "Free Student/Trainee Associate Application" on the right handside of your screen to download the application form. The precise criteria will vary according to the individual's profession:

Radiologists and oncologists: if you are a medical graduate who is undertaking a 5-year training course towards FRCR in Clinical Radiology or Clinical Oncology.

Radiographers: if you are undertaking either a 3-year BSc or are within your first 2 years as a radiographer or practitioner, and those undertaking a 2-year foundation degree or are within their first 3 years as an assistant practitioner. Also if you are an MSc, PhD or DProf student or within your first year of graduation of a postgraduate programme.

Medical physicists: if you are an MSc student or a graduate undertaking the IPEM Part 1 or Part 2 training; or similar, if you are a PhD student, or if you are an MSc graduate within your first year as a clinical scientist/engineer.

If you are at the start of your training you will qualify for the full 5 years' free Associate Membership while if you are at the end, you will qualify for 1 year's membership. At the end of the free membership period, individuals will be invited to continue as Associate Members or Full Members according to their individual requirements.

Through this scheme, you will have full access to BJR Online and Imaging Online, you will receive BIR News, you will have access to the Members' section of the BIR website, and you will have the opportunity to network with professionals within the broad field of radiology. You will also be able to attend the BIR's scientific meetings for just £48.

All you need to do is to download an application form from the right hand toolbar of this page (or contact Graham Whittal, the Membership Officer, tel. 020 7307 1408, email ), and complete and return this form by post, together with your supervisor/tutor's signature (or with the appropriate certificate) to the address on the front of the form. Once you have applied you will start receiving the benefits of membership as soon as your application has been logged. Graham will then contact you with details of how many years' free Associate Membership you will receive, based on your length of time in the field.

If you are already a BIR member and fall within the categories described above, please contact Graham at if you would like to take advantage of this free Associate Membership offer.

Please encourage your junior colleagues and students to apply! We hope that you will approve of and support this excellent opportunity for young colleagues to join the Institute.
