How you can help the BIR

The British Institute of Radiology is a registered charity which seeks to improve the prevention and detection of disease and the management and treatment of patients through the development of radiology and allied sciences. The BIR does this primarily by helping professionals working in the field to keep up to date with latest advances, through its scientific meetings, publications and Information Centre. The BIR is the only multidisciplinary radiology organisation in the UK, welcoming anyone with an interest into its membership.

The BIR is developing a number of new initiatives to encourage schoolchildren to consider entering the field of radiology and also to support the next generation of radiology professionals. From this year the Institute is offering free Associate Membership to students and trainees within the UK, and funding is being sought to enable the development of the Schools Initiative to get under way.

As well as looking to the future, as the world's oldest radiology organisation the BIR is the guardian of a major historical book collection and important archival material related to the history of the Institute and key individuals that have played an important part in its life. The Institute is currently in the process of cataloguing a large collection of invaluable papers from the late Sir Godfrey Hounsfield, the inventor of CT, and has on display in its Library the first prototype CT scanner. This year all back volumes of the British Journal of Radiology will be digitized going right back to 1896.

The BIR is an independent organisation which relies on funds generated through its scientific meetings, publishing activities and membership subscriptions as well as donations, to continue to develop its work.

Please help us through making a donation to one of our funds:

  • The General Fund - for the general purposes of the BIR, as decided by its Trustees.

  • The Education Fund - to encourage public awareness of radiology; to stimulate schoolchildren's interest in science and medicine, and to encourage them to consider a career in radiology; and to support the provision of information and free BIR Associate Membership to students/trainees in the radiological field.

  • The Archives Fund - to support the maintenance of the BIR's Archives and the acquisition and cataloguing of further items of historical importance.

How to donate:

  • Please send a cheque made payable to the British Institute of Radiology, stating to which fund the donation should be applied.

  • Please click here to download our donation form. Complete and return it including your credit card details.

  • Please consider remembering the BIR in your will.

All donations big or small will be gratefully received and will help the Institute not only to continue its present work but also to develop the range of its charitable activities.
