  • Environmental Permitting Regulations 2010 - Radioactive Substances Act (RSA93) is being significantly modified with effect from 05 April this year.  Much of its current content will in future be contained within new "Environmental Permitting Regulations 2010".
  • Dr. Nishat Bharwani in Strictly Come Dancing! - Dr. Nishat Bharwani won two tickets for Strictly Come Dancing in last BIR Quiz Competition.  She had a 'wonderful evening' at the O2 Arena on 7 February.  This lovely lady shared with us a picture of the evening.

  • Enhancement of natural background gamma-radiation dose around uranium microparticles in the human body - by John E. Pattison,Richard P. Hugtenburg and Stuart Green.                                               Ongoing controversy surrounds the adverse health effects of the use of depleted uranium (DU) munitions. The biological effects of gamma-radiation arise from the direct or indirect interaction between secondary electrons and the DNA of living cells.
  • Audio slideshow: The first X-rays                                                                                                         German physicist Wilhelm Roentgen's image of a ghostly skeletal hand, wearing an enormous wedding ring, shocked and fascinated the public when it was published in newspapers in January 1896.
  • Reynolds' X-ray machine voted most important invention of the century by public (press release of the Science Museum).
    The x-ray Machine has been selected by public voters as the object which they believe has made the greatest impact on the past, present and future. The invention finished in clear first place following the public vote, which began on 10 June 2009 as part of the Science Museum's events to mark its Centenary.

    The National Radiological Protection Board has produced, in collaboration with  the College of Radiographers, the Royal College of Radiologists and the Royal College of General Practitioners, a leaflet which gives you further details concerning the different scans that are done at a hospital and what to except.
