Below is a list of free databases, free access journals and some other useful resources.

Academic clinical oncology and radiobiology research network (ACORRN)
ACORRN, the Academic Clinical Oncology and Radiobiology Research Network is a National Cancer Research Institute (NCRI) initiative, funded by Cancer Research UK, the Medical Research Council and the Department of Health. Its aim is to develop and revitalise radiotherapy research in the UK by networking and supporting groups and individuals, and by developing an infrastructure and integrated strategy to support this. ACORRN is open to anyone working in or interested in radiotherapy research, and provides a range of services including access to funding resources, a database of active research projects, collaboration tools, job vacancies, education and training resources, relevant news and forthcoming events.

Edinburgh Centre for Neuro-Oncology
The Edinburgh Centre for Neuro-Oncology (ECNO) is a multidisciplinary unit of the Departments of Clinical Neuroscience and Clinical Oncology, University of Edinburgh. Created in 1998 by a Scottish Office funded redesign initiative, ECNO is a referral centre for neuro-oncological problems, and is also involved in national and international trials in neuro-oncology and postgraduate education in neuro-oncology. This site provides information for both patients and health care professionals. For patients there is a brain tumour glossary, a FAQs page, and an outline of the facilities at ECNO. For medical professionals there is a series of practice guidelines. There is also information provided from Brain Tumour Action (BTA) a Scottish charity.

European Society for Medical Oncology
The European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) was founded in 1975 to advance the art, science and practice of medical oncology and disseminating knowledge, in order to maintain a high common standard in medical practice for cancer patients. The site provides information on the organisation including ESMO courses, congresses, conferences, working groups, task forces, newsletters, and the ESMO Clinical Discussion Forum. The Reference section has links to the full-text of clinical guidelines, archived abstracts, books from ESMO congresses, and links to sites of related interest. It includes a section for patient resources. Some sections are for ESMO members only.

MDLinx : radiology
This site provides physicians, radiology marketers, and other health care providers with an array of information. Since its inception this site has grown in content and quality. Information available includes a unique mdlink interface for the Medline database, up to regularly updated news briefings taken from Medical Journals, and a careers link. Most of the information can be seen without using the free registration procedure. Upon registration additional services include daily access to the radiology newsletter and an e-filing cabinet.

Radiology textbook at eMedicine
This online textbook from eMedicine.com, Inc provides information on a wide range of radiology topics. Broad chapter headings include brain/spine, breast, cardiac, chest, gastrointestinal, genitourinary, head and neck, multisystem, musculoskeletal, obstetrics/gynaecology, paediatrics, technical/physics, and vascular/interventional. Each chapter is written by physicians, who can update their chapter at any time. Each chapter has full author and editor details, with contact email addresses, and how far the chapter has been completed. This free Web resource is aimed at the professional medical audience.

Cancer patient's physician : recommendations for the development of medical oncology in England and Wales
This report prepared by a working group of the Royal College of Physicians (RCP) in collaboration with the Association of Cancer Physicians in the UK, was published in 2000. This document seeks to inform the distribution of new consultant medical oncology posts optimally to enhance non-surgical cancer care. Topics covered by this report include the role and training of a medical oncologist, the demand for chemotherapy, medical oncology posts within the NHS, and medical oncology services within general hospitals. This report provides a series of recommendations about future developments and also includes relevant appendices.

Making your chemotherapy service more patient-friendly
This leaflet has been produced by lay members of the Clinical Oncology Patients' Liaison Group (COPLG) to share their experiences and insights from the perspective of the user of chemotherapy services. It is hoped that the recommendations will encourage healthcare staff to adopt procedures to make chemotherapy as tolerable as possible for their patients. The leaflet includes sections on information and communication about treatment, the clinical oncology department, administering treatment and afterwards, taking part in research, prescription charges, reviewing patient-friendly policies, and a description of roles in the clinical oncology department. The 28-page document was published by the Royal College of Radiologists in 2008.

Head and Neck Oncology
Head and Neck Oncology is an electronic journal published by Biomed Central (BMC), an independent online open access publisher providing free access to the full-text of peer-reviewed biological and medical research articles published in its various online journals. Research articles describe all aspects of clinical practice, basic and translational research on the aetiology, pathophysiology, diagnosis, assessment, management, follow-up and prognosis of patients with head and neck tumours. These are available from January 2009 onwards and are freely accessible online permanently. Articles are listed in PubMed and are archived in internationally recognised free access repositories such as PubMedCentral, the US National Library of Medicine's full-text repository of life science literature, and also in repositories at the University of Potsdam in Germany, at INIST in France and in e-Depot, the National Library of the Netherlands digital archive of all electronic publications. Cancerworld is a free, online educational resource and information service for professionals working in the oncology field. This portal is provided by the European School of Oncology (ESO) and brings together doctors, nurses and patients in the fight against cancer in the developed and developing world. Cancer index
CancerIndex, incorporating the Guide to Internet Resources for Cancer, Children's Cancer Web, and Cancer GeneticsWeb, was established in 1996 by Simon Cotterill on a voluntary/not-for-profit basis. The site provides a directory of some of the key cancer-related websites and pages, and is organised by cancer type. The site also features access to free multimedia oncology resources, a directory of UK based cancer organisations, and a glossary.

Cancer medicine 6
The book 'Cancer Medicine 6' covers both biological and medical aspects of cancer medicine. In broad terms the book covers cancer biology, pathology, surgical oncology, psycho-oncology, paediatric oncology, complications of cancer and its treatment and oncology and informatics. The biological sections of the book cover molecular biology, genomics, proteomics, immunology, aetiology, epidemiology, prevention, pathology, neoplasm imaging, radiation oncology, pharmacology, drug resistance, biotherapeutics, endocrine therapy, gene therapy, bone marrow transplantation and neoplasms in AIDS. The book was edited by Kufe, et al and was published by BC Decker Inc. in 2003. It was made available on the Web by the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) from their 'Bookshelf' where a collection of biomedical books have been adapted for the Web.

Cancer Tales : communicating in cancer care
This is an online workbook aimed at health professional and medical students in which cancer survivors describe their experiences of having their cancers diagnosed and managed and through a variety of scenes and scripts based on the play 'Cancer Tales' by Nell Dunn, offers advice in better communication, breaking bad news, empathy and listening techniques that doctors, nurses and other medical and care staff can learn from. This 180 page workbook published in 2007 is an education and training resource available to view electronically and is endorsed by the European Association for Palliative Care (EAPC), the European Oncology Nursing Society (EONS), Lance Armstrong Foundation (LAF) and OpenMinds.

Second-line treatments for advanced ovarian cancer
This is an overview of one of a series of research projects undertaken by the Centre for Reviews and Dissemination (CRD) at the University of York in association with the Centre for Health Economics at the University of York, the Economic and Health Research Centre at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra, and the Department of Oncology at Bradford Royal Infirmary. Commissioned by the Health Technology Assessment (HTA) Programme and published in 2006, this systematic review and economic evaluation examined the clinical effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of intravenous formulations of topotecan monotherapy, PLDH monotherapy and paclitaxel used alone or in combination with a platinum-based compound for the second-line or subsequent treatment of advanced ovarian cancer. Belgian museum of radiology
The website of the Belgian Museum of Radiology in Brussels. The museum, which is located in the radiology department of the Queen Astrid Military Hospital, was opened to the public in 1990. It contains over 1500 items and the collections can be searched or browsed through a range of formats including 'Objects', 'Books', 'Revues' (Journals), 'Posters' and 'Videos'. There is also a Virtual Museum which is currently being developed (August 2005) and requires the installation of the QuickTime plug-in. Additional features include a Publications section, visiting information and details of forthcoming events. The Historical Papers section contains a selection of articles relating the history of radiology within Belgium, with specific reference to Wilhelm Röntgen, who was awarded the 1901 Nobel Prize for Physics for his discovery of X-Rays. The articles are available in PDF format and will require the installation of the Adobe Acrobat Reader. The website is also available in French and Dutch.

Specialty specific guidance in support of applications under Article 14 - clinical radiology
This document was approved by the Postgraduate Medical Education and Training Board (PMETB) in September 2005 and offers guidance for clinical radiologists relating to good medical practice - comprising good clinical care, relationships with patients, maintaining good medical practice and keeping up to date, teaching and training, appraising and assessing, working with colleagues, and probity and health - protecting patients and the profession. Much of the information is in tabular form, referring to criteria for specialists in clinical radiology, standards for meeting those criteria, and suggested evidence to be provided (such as training and experience). Radiology rounds
Radiology Rounds presents a selection of musculoskeletal cases, drawn from the files of the John Hopkins Rheumatology, Orthopaedic Surgery, and Radiology departments. Each Radiology Round includes a clinical history of the case, radiographs, and a description of the radiographic findings. The correct diagnosis is identified along with a brief discussion and references. Cases remain on the website indefinately, and one or two new cases will be added each month. CHORUS
CHORUS (Collaborative Hypertext of Radiology) is a quick reference hypertext for physicians and medical students. More than 1,100 documents describe different diseases, radiological findings, differential-diagnosis lists (gamuts), and pertinent anatomy, pathology, and physiology. These are arranged by organ system and are interconnected by hypertext links. Documents are very brief and generally do not contain images. The documents may also be retrieved by title search. New contributors are welcomed as either authors or reviewers. The site is provided by the Medical College of Wisconsin USA.

ARRS GoldMiner
ARRS GoldMiner is a search tool for accessing images published in selected peer-reviewed radiology journals. Searching of images can be done by anatomy, findings, imaging technique, and patient age and sex. Use of the Unified Medical Language System Metathesaurus from the US National Library of Medicine helps in concept and keyword searching of free-text image captions. ARRS GoldMiner is a service from the American Roentgen Ray Society, and as of early 2008 could search more than 172,000 radiology images from more than 220 journals.

SearchingRadiology.com is a digital library with a search engine, enabling searches to be conducted to retrieve radiology peer-reviewed information from within a selection of particular resources on the Web. Radiologists can use the search facility as a tool to retrieve information that includes clinical images, electronic textbooks, atlases and journal articles. The information is retrieved from some key large online services and the free full-text journal information is from the journals AJR, Radiographics and Radiology. RadiologyWeb
RadiologyWeb is an electronic educational resource created by practising and teaching radiologists, aimed at those working or studying within the field of radiology. Designed and published by Vertibrae Inc, (a developer of educational resources for medical professionals), this site provides original articles, reviews, editorials and teaching/conference cases, dealing with important issues and developments in the practice of radiology. Specialist sections of the site include the View Box, which is a searchable archive of teaching cases indexed by diagnosis code, a Case of the Month section which provides a brief history, radiographic findings, diagnosis, discussion and supporting references. General sections include a listing of CME radiology conferences and meetings, posting of job opportunities, a discussion forum and biographic details of the RadiologyWeb Board members. All the content of this site is selected, authored and approved by the RadiologyWeb Board of experts. Access to this site is free, an initial brief registration is required. This site is supported by an unrestricted grant from Bracco. Flash plug-in software is required to view the images available in the View Box section.

A collection of clinical resources and information on medical imaging, medical diagnostics and radiology topics, Medcylopaedia includes a library of descriptions to search for over 18,000 related topics, free access to over 10,000 illustrations, images and media clips, on-line versions of the textbooks Encyclopaedia of Medical Imaging and A Global Textbook of Radiology, and chapters from the ESNR CD-ROM series that use e-learning to teach skills in identifying anatomical conditions through histological images. Designed primarily for radiologists and radiographers, this resource would also be of use to other health care professionals and students, providing a source of reference to acquire knowledge and skills in diagnosis and to improve image-reading skills. The Royal College of Radiologists (RCR) is a UK based registered charity that represents over 5400 international members and Fellows from the disciplines of clinical oncology and clinical radiology. This site contains information on the RCR activities, structure, publications and educational resources. Sections of this site include information on the Faculty of Clinical Oncology that comprises all Clinical Oncology members and Fellows of the College and the Faculty of Clinical Radiology that comprises all Clinical Radiology members and Fellows of the College. There is also information on the College's Radiology Patients' Liaison Group (CRPLG) and the Clinical Oncology Patients' Liaison Group (COPLG) their publications and activities. Basic chest x-ray review
The "basic chest X-ray review" introduces one method of reviewing a normal chest radiograph, and aims to teach a systematic approach to reviewing X-ray film. This resource has been produced by the Department of Radiology and Nuclear Medicine of The Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, Bethesda. The chest X-ray review is arranged into the following sections: administration and initial review; soft tissues and bones; mediastinum general & superior; anterior middle and posterior mediastinum; hila; lungs; and pleura. A checklist summarising the review process is included.

Digital journal of ophthalmology
A peer reviewed ophthalmology journal which is published free on the web, sponsored by the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Surgery, a teaching affiliate of the Harvard Medical School. First published in 1995, the Journal offers full-text access to original journal articles. This site also provides access to patient information FAQs which cover a range of topics including cataracts, diabetic retinopathy, dry eyes, glaucoma, iritis and retinoblastoma. A selection of interesting cases from the Grand Rounds of 4 US eye hospitals are available. The history, examination, radiology, pathology, differential diagnosis and diagnosis of most of these cases is available. A series of knowledge review quizzes with answers are provided and cover varying subjects within the field of ophthalmology. In addition, there are CD-ROM reviews and a collection of useful Web resources organised alphabetically. This site provides information of use to patients, researchers, students and health professionals. No registration is required to view the journal, but it does allow for personalisation of the site.

Safe sedation of children undergoing diagnostic and therapeutic procedures
'Safe sedation of children undergoing diagnostic and therapeutic procedures' is the Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network (SIGN's) 58th guideline, published in February 2002. The guideline provides an introduction, and covers preparation for sedation, sedation techniques, medical paediatrics specialty requirements, dentistry specialty requirements, radiology specialty requirements, accident and emergency specialty requirements, key messages for patients and parents, implementation and audit and development of the guideline. Imaging for idiots
This website, Imaging for Idiots, has been created by Gareth Wynn, whilst a medical student at the University of Manchester. As part of his research project, this educational resource, aimed at medical and other bioscience students, focuses on medical imaging techniques (MRI and CT scanning). All the factual information provided on this site has been verified by senior academics/lecturers from the faculty of medicine, dentistry, and nursing, University of Manchester. Teaching resources include tutorials, case studies, and an interactive quiz. The tutorials cover scientific techniques behind MRI and CT images, understanding images, and the diagnosis/presenting of images. The case studies are accompanied by a corresponding scan, and there is a self assessment quiz. Published and made available on the Web by the University of Manchester.

SRS-X
The SRS Educational Resource (SRS-X) features a collection of educational resources produced and made available on the Web by the Scottish Radiological Society. This resource features cases, tutorials and MCQs. The cases can be listed either as unknowns or by diagnosis and cover the ten ACR codes (breast, skull, face, spine, skeletal, heart, lung, gastrointestinal, genitourinary and vascular indexes). The online tutorials cover renal transplants, lobar collapse and CT in head trauma. The MCQs cover the FRCR examination Part one and two. Aimed at health professionals.

ICNIRP : International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection
The International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP) consists of a body of independent scientific experts who address the "important issues of possible adverse effects on human health of exposure to non-ionizing radiation" and aims to provide information and advice relating to the potential health hazards of exposure to non-ionising radiation. The website provides links to meetings and workshops, publications in the area of electromagnetic fields, optical radiation, ultrasound and general topics which are free to download. Links are also provided to other organisations such as WHO and the International Radiation Protection Association (IRPA), amongst others.

Skincare of patients receiving radiotherapy
One of a series of best practice statements intended primarily for nurses, midwives and the staff who support them, this was published by NHS Quality Improvement Scotland (NHS QIS) in April 2004. The 36-page best practice statement has six sections; effects of radiotherapy on the skin, risk factors for radiotherapy skin reactions, basic skincare guidelines, skincare during and post treatment, delayed skin reactions, combined modality treatment, radiation recall reaction and communicating best practice for radiotherapy skincare. The publication also includes information on the developmental process for the best practice statements which aim to 'describe the best and achievable practice in a specific area of care'.

Radiological fundamentals
This resource on 'radiological fundamentals' is made available on the Web by the Jefferson Lab as part of their 'Radiological Worker Training Guide'. Topics covered include atoms and radiation; radiation versus contamination; units of measurement; and types of ionising radiation. Review questions are included to test the users knowledge of the subject, and answers are provided. The Jefferson Lab is managed and operated by Southeastern Universities Research Association (SURA) for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE).

Committee on Medical Aspects of Radiation in the Environment : COMARE
The Committee on Medical Aspects of Radiation in the Environment (COMARE) is an independent expert advisory committee that offers advice to all UK Government Departments and Devolved Authorities, on issues relating to the health effects of natural and man-made radiation in the environment. This site provides information on current research undertaken by COMARE, committee membership, and ongoing work programmes. There is an FAQ section on ionising radiation, and links to news, press releases, and other organisations. COMARE publications, which include reports and position statements, are available online in PDF.

Diagnostic atlas of intrathoracic tuberculosis in children
This publication from the International Union against Tuberculosis and Lung Diseases (IUATLD) is intended primarily as a guide to assist health care workers practising in low-income countries in the interpretation of chest radiographs in children suspected of having TB. To a wider audience of health care workers and students, it also offers a useful collection of radiological pictures of intrathoracic tuberculosis in childhood.

X-ray2000
This site has been designed by a senior radiographer and clinical tutor. It includes information on techniques, tutorial notes for students, the history of X-rays, courses, careers, and regulations relevant to radiographers. The imagebase contains X-rays divided by regions of the body. The schools section includes an interactive skeleton which enables you to click on a body diagram and view an X-ray of that part.
